Relight the Lamp – Concrete Pour this Weekend!

As part of the revitalization efforts of the Lamp Theatre, volunteers are needed to help pour concrete this Saturday! The past few weeks have been spent digging, reinforcing, filling and leveling in preparation for this BIG event!

The committee is asking for ALL HANDS ON DECK on Saturday, Oct. 11, beginning at 7 AM.

If you have experience with this type of work, your skills are needed and very much appreciated! They will be pouring approximately 50 yards of concrete in the orchestra pit, stadium seating area and bathrooms.

If you don’t experience but are willing and able to shovel, push and wheelbarrow, your help is greatly appreciated!  Volunteers are also needed to support the finishers, clean tools, and clean debris out of the basement.

What should you bring?

  • Bring your finishing tools.  You might need them all or you might not.
  • The day will start in the concession area to take inventory and create a game plan.
  • And, don’t forget your concrete boots!

If you are excited to help, but are a concrete novice like many of the volunteers, check out this site for some interesting insight and valuable tips:

And don’t worry.  There will be some pros on hand to make sure everything goes smoothly!

If you are planning to volunteer at the Lamp for the first time this Saturday, here are a few things you should know:

  • You are encouraged to bring your own hand tools and a tool belt.
  • Safety glasses, gloves, dust masks, and some basic tools will be provided.
  • Hard hats are not required, but you can bring your own if you like.
  • Bottled water & snacks will also be provided.
  • At this point, the Lamp is an active construction area; so children are not permitted.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month… Are You Prepared for Life’s “What if’s”?

This year marks the 11th anniversary of Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM), an effort to raise awareness among consumers about the need for life insurance. Americans by and large are not saving enough money and many households are still mired in debt. Many see value in life insurance, but less than half have individual life insurance policies. According to LIMRA:

  • Less than half of middle market consumers ages 25 to 64 have individual life insurance coverage.
  • 44% of those without life coverage say they need it.
  • 86% say they haven’t bought life insurance because it is too expensive, yet overestimate its true cost by more than TWO times.

We’ve compiled some helpful Life Insurance Awareness tools and real-life stories to help you protect your financial security:

Are You Prepared if Disaster Strikes?

September is National Preparedness Month, when the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages people to take action to prepare for disaster.  Check out the information below for simple steps on how to be better prepared in case disaster strikes.

For the tech savvy

The Insurance Information Institute offers free apps for mobile phones that help people prepare for disasters.

People who use an iPhone, iPad, or iTouch can develop a plan for emergency situations with the Know Your Plan app, which features Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IIBHS) disaster preparedness guidelines for hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, earthquakes, and severe winter weather.

For families

Get started on a plan for your family by visiting and FEMA’s downloadable Family Communication Plan template. You can fill in the pages online and then print the plan and keep a copy in an accessible location.

FEMA’s Ready Kids program uses cartoon characters and kid-friendly content to get the whole family involved in preparation.

For everyone

The IBHS ZIP code tool makes it easy for customers to determine the severe weather risks they face in their community and get instant access to disaster planning resources.

Assemble a basic supply kit for earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters. FEMA has a list of recommended items on its website, plus tips on maintaining the kit, where to store it and more.

Ensuring you have a full inventory of personal belongings will help the claims process go smoother if possessions are damaged in a disaster. Check out the Insurance Information Institute’s free home inventory software or download a pre-written article from the Marketing Solutions Center that offer tips for completing and storing a home inventory.

Happy Fourth of July!

Barbecues, swimming, fun and fireworks!

As we prepare for the Fourth of July holiday weekend,  please keep in mind some safety precautions when handling fireworks:

  • Never allow children to touch fireworks of any kind, including sparklers even after they have “gone off”. It can be hot, or even explosive and debris from fireworks can be extremely dangerous.
  • Older teens should only be allowed to use fireworks under close adult supervision.
  • Fireworks must never be used while drinking alcohol or using other drugs.
  • Obey all local laws.
  • If allowed in your area and you choose to do so, buy fireworks only from reliable sellers.
  • Store fireworks in a dry, cool place.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors and always have a good amount of water close by (a garden hose and a bucket), in case of emergency.
  • Read and follow label directions.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Never hold any part of your body directly over the firework while lighting it.
  • Be sure all other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Never throw or point fireworks at anyone.
  • Never light fireworks in a container, especially a metal or glass container.
  • Never light fireworks near a house or building, dry leaves or grass, or any other materials that can catch on fire.
  • Never re-light a “dud” firework. Instead, wait 15 to 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water and throw it away.

Information was adapted from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

From our family to yours, have a safe and wonderful Fourth of July holiday!

And, if you are in the market for motorcycle coverage, Duncan Financial Group offers customizable insurance programs to meet your specific biking needs. Whether you ride a cruiser, trike, touring bike, custom, chopper or sports bike, we are here to help you choose the coverage that is right for you and your bike…at a reasonable price!
